Among Dutch medieval and sixteenth-century townhalls the townhall of Kampen takes a proud place because of its well-preserved courtroom. The mantelpiece by Colijn de Nole shows a rich iconographic program, meant to impress both the city counsellors and those attending trials, be it as a defendant in a criminal trial or as a spectator. One of the things that make this room special is the double character as both a council room and a court room

On April 13, 2013 the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) was launched, an initiative with digitized sources from a number of American cultural and scientific institutions. Earlier this year the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) started, which gives access to the digital collections of over 2,000 institutions in Germany. The DDB is still in its beta-version. In this post I will compare the new American and German national digital libraries. For this purpose I will look both at rather random chosen subjects, and also at specific subjects from legal history at large. What riches do the new Amrican and German portals show? Do these two new digital libraries compare favorably with other national digital libraries? It is interesting to look how many comparable initiatives exist worldwide. Sometimes it is even difficult to tell a national library portal apart from a general search portal or a national portal for digitized cultural heritage.

Current events around the efforts to regulate the economy of Cyprus by severe measures afflicting individuals, Cypriotic banks and the banking systems are in this post the background for looking at websites concerning numismatics, the historical auxiliairy science dealing with money, coins, minting and much more. What can numismatics bring to legal history? A second theme in this post are money museums. Just as for museums concerning legal history in general it is not easy to create a sensible overview of relevant museums and collections. In this post I look at some of these difficulties.

Recently the secret dossier kept by the French Ministry of Defense on the Dreyfus affair has been digitized. In this post I look briefly at this dossier and at several websites concerning this cause célèbre at the turn of the nineteenth century. A number of online exhibitions offer a wealth of information about this case in which nationalism, feelings of insecurity and fear, and the growing tension between European nations at the turn of the nineteenth century come together. The role of the media at the time, both journals and magazines, helped literally creating images of the affair. Due attention is therefore given to image databases.

On February 18, 2013 Tom de Smidt died, and on March 2, 2013 Robert Feenstra passed away. Both scholars teached at Leiden University. For many years they were the leading Dutch legal historians. De Smidt was not as well known outside The Netherlands as Robert Feenstra. De Smidt started many large research projects concerning Dutch legal history. Feenstra studied the European dimensions of Dutch legal history, and in particular the medieval period. His main focus was the reception of Roman law in Europe. Much space would be needed to mention all his scholarly publications, interests and activities. In this post I bring a salute to both eminent scholars.

The news of the abdication of pope Benedict XVI invites to reflection on the history and legal provisions for this action. In this notice I will look very briefly at the history of papal abdication by pointing to some scholarly studies.

Today I launched a new blog called "Glossae - Middeleeuwse juridische glossen in beeld", at http://glossae.hypotheses.org. At this blog I will discuss the glosses in a manuscript fragment of Justinian's Digest from the twelfth century. The glosses in this fragment at Utrecht University Library predate the ordinary gloss that was created during the thirteenth century. Manuscripts with earlier these glosses are relatively rare. The aim of the blog is to accompany an edition of the glosses in the margin and the interlineary glosses, using and comparing digital tools and techniques that facilitate nowadays editions of texts and annotations.
